In competitive play, Poliwag is placed in the VGC tier where it holds a 0.08% usage rate. Its key abilities are Water Absorb and Damp and Swift Swim, which allow it to function as both an offensive pivot and a rain sweeper. Poliwag is weak to Electric, Grass-type moves, so trainers should plan around these vulnerabilities.
