Understanding Pokemon Items
Items in the Pokemon series serve a wide variety of purposes, from healing your team to powering up attacks in competitive battles. Held items in particular have become a cornerstone of competitive team building, as the right item can transform a Pokemon's effectiveness.
Competitive Held Items
The most impactful held items in competitive play include Leftovers (1/16 HP recovery per turn), Choice Band/Specs/Scarf (1.5x stat boost but locked to one move), Life Orb (1.3x damage at the cost of 10% HP per attack), and Eviolite (1.5x both defenses for not-fully-evolved Pokemon). Heavy-Duty Boots prevent entry hazard damage, making them essential for hazard-weak Pokemon.
Evolution Items
Many Pokemon require specific items to evolve. Evolution stones like Fire Stone, Water Stone, and Thunder Stone trigger evolution when used on compatible Pokemon. Trade-held items like Metal Coat (Scizor), Dragon Scale (Kingdra), and Protector (Rhyperior) cause evolution when the holding Pokemon is traded.
Mega Stones & Z-Crystals
Mega Stones, introduced in Generation VI, allow specific Pokemon to Mega Evolve during battle, gaining boosted stats and sometimes new abilities or types. Z-Crystals from Generation VII enable one-time powerful Z-Moves. While both mechanics are limited to their respective generations, they remain important for formats that allow them.
Berries & Recovery Items
Type-reducing berries (Yache Berry, Occa Berry, etc.) halve the damage of a super-effective hit of a specific type. Pinch berries like Sitrus Berry restore HP when it falls below a threshold. These consumable items add another layer of prediction and counterplay to competitive battles.
