Water Absorb in Battle

Water Absorb provides complete immunity to Water-type moves while simultaneously turning them into a healing opportunity. When a Pokémon with this ability is targeted by any Water-type attack, it restores 25% of its maximum HP instead of taking damage. This healing occurs regardless of the move's original power, meaning even devastating attacks like Hydro Pump become beneficial recovery tools. The ability completely negates all effects of the Water-type move, including secondary effects like stat changes or status conditions.

One important mechanical detail is that Water-type moves will bypass Substitute when targeting a Pokémon with Water Absorb, allowing the healing to occur even when the Pokémon is protected behind a substitute. This ensures the ability remains consistently functional regardless of battlefield conditions.

Competitively, Water Absorb proves most valuable on Pokémon that can capitalize on the free healing and switch-in opportunities it provides. Notable users like Vaporeon and Lapras can pivot into predicted Water-type attacks from common threats, gaining momentum while recovering health. Volcanion stands out as particularly interesting since its Fire/Water typing means it can absorb its own Water-type moves in double battles. Seismitoad and Poliwrath benefit from the ability when facing Water-type opponents, turning potential weaknesses into advantages. The ability's reliability makes it a solid defensive tool in formats where Water-type moves are prevalent.
