Thick Fat
Gen IIIThis Pokémon takes half as much damage from Fire- and Ice-type moves.
Thick Fat in Battle
Thick Fat provides exceptional defensive utility by reducing incoming damage from Fire- and Ice-type attacks by half. This damage reduction applies to all Fire and Ice moves, regardless of whether they are physical or special attacks, making it one of the more straightforward yet valuable defensive abilities in the game. The ability activates automatically whenever the Pokemon is targeted by moves of these types, effectively giving the user a permanent resistance that can dramatically alter matchup dynamics.
The ability has remained mechanically consistent since its introduction in Generation 3, though the game descriptions have evolved to provide clearer explanations of its function over time. Early descriptions were vague about the specific mechanics, but later generations explicitly clarified that the ability halves damage from Fire and Ice moves. This consistency has made Thick Fat a reliable defensive option across multiple generations of competitive play.
In competitive battling, Thick Fat transforms certain Pokemon into formidable walls against specific offensive threats. Snorlax becomes an even more imposing special wall with reduced vulnerability to common Fire-type coverage moves, while Mamoswine gains valuable protection against Fire moves that would otherwise exploit its quad weakness. The ability is particularly valuable on bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Walrein, where the damage reduction can mean the difference between surviving powerful attacks and being knocked out, allowing these Pokemon to fulfill their defensive roles more effectively.
