Tangling Hair in Battle
Tangling Hair is a defensive ability introduced in Generation 7 that punishes physical attackers who make contact with the Pokémon. When the ability holder takes damage from any contact move, the attacking Pokémon automatically has its Speed stat lowered by one stage. This creates an interesting risk-reward dynamic for opponents, as common physical attacks like Earthquake, Close Combat, and U-turn can all trigger the Speed reduction if they involve direct contact with the defending Pokémon.
The ability activates regardless of how much damage is dealt, meaning even if the contact move would normally knock out the Tangling Hair user, the Speed drop still occurs before the Pokémon faints. This makes it particularly effective against fast physical sweepers who rely on their Speed advantage to overwhelm teams. However, the ability only works against moves that make contact, so special attacks, status moves, and non-contact physical moves like Earthquake bypass the effect entirely.
Competitively, Tangling Hair sees most of its use on Alolan Dugtrio, which can leverage the ability alongside its Arena Trap to create speed control scenarios. The Ground/Steel typing of both Alolan Dugtrio and Alolan Diglett provides useful resistances that help them survive contact moves long enough for the ability to matter. While not a game-changing ability, Tangling Hair can disrupt opposing momentum and create opportunities for slower teammates to capitalize on the reduced Speed tiers.
