Reckless in Battle

Reckless provides a straightforward but valuable 20% power boost to moves that inflict recoil damage on the user, as well as the risky crash moves Jump Kick and High Jump Kick that damage the user when they miss their target. This boost transforms already powerful moves like Double-Edge, Head Smash, and Flare Blitz into devastating attacks that can break through even the sturdiest defensive walls. Notably, Struggle does not receive this boost despite being a recoil move, maintaining the move's role as a last-resort option.

The ability has remained mechanically unchanged since its introduction in Generation 4, consistently offering the same reliable damage multiplier across all generations. In competitive play, Reckless finds its most notable application on Pokemon like Rhyperior, which can leverage the boosted Head Smash to incredible effect, and Emboar, whose Flare Blitz becomes a terrifying wallbreaking tool. Mienshao also appreciates the boost to High Jump Kick, making it an even more dangerous Fighting-type attacker despite the risk of crash damage.

The trade-off inherent in Reckless creates interesting risk-reward scenarios where players must weigh the substantial power increase against the mounting recoil damage that can quickly wear down their Pokemon. This dynamic makes Reckless users particularly effective as wallbreakers and late-game cleaners, where the immediate power boost often outweighs the long-term sustainability concerns.
