Rocky Payload in Battle

Rocky Payload is a straightforward offensive ability that amplifies the power of all Rock-type moves used by the Pokémon by 50%. This multiplicative boost applies to any Rock-type attack in the wielder's moveset, making previously moderate-damage Rock moves significantly more threatening. The ability functions similarly to other type-boosting abilities like Blaze or Torrent, but provides its enhancement unconditionally rather than requiring a health threshold to activate.

Bombirdier is currently the sole possessor of this ability, which creates an interesting dynamic given its Flying/Dark typing. While Bombirdier doesn't receive STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) from Rock-type moves, Rocky Payload's 50% boost partially compensates for this limitation, making Rock moves nearly as powerful as if they were boosted by STAB. This allows Bombirdier to function as an effective Rock-type attacker despite lacking the typing itself.

The ability's competitive relevance centers on transforming Bombirdier into a potent Rock-type threat that can surprise opponents expecting a typical Flying/Dark moveset. Moves like Stone Edge or Rock Slide become genuine offensive options rather than mere coverage moves. Since Rocky Payload was introduced in Generation 9 alongside Bombirdier, it represents Game Freak's continued experimentation with type-boosting abilities that don't require specific activation conditions, providing consistent offensive pressure throughout battle.
