Gorilla Tactics
Gen VIIIGorilla Tactics in Battle
Gorilla Tactics provides a significant boost to the user's Attack stat, increasing it by 50%, but comes with a substantial drawback that fundamentally changes how the Pokemon battles. Once the Pokemon enters battle and selects its first move, it becomes locked into using only that move for the duration of its time on the field. This creates a unique risk-reward dynamic where players must carefully consider their initial move selection, as switching moves becomes impossible without switching the Pokemon out first.
The ability essentially transforms the user into a powerful but predictable offensive threat. While the 50% Attack boost can turn even moderately powerful moves into devastating attacks, the inability to adapt movesets mid-battle leaves the Pokemon vulnerable to defensive responses and type resistances. The lock-in effect applies immediately upon move selection, meaning there's no opportunity to change strategy based on opponent switches or field conditions.
Galarian Darmanitan serves as the signature user of this ability, where it pairs particularly well with high base power moves like Icicle Crash or Flare Blitz. In competitive play, Gorilla Tactics Pokemon often function as wallbreakers or revenge killers, relying on their boosted Attack to punch through defensive cores. However, successful implementation requires careful team support and prediction, as the move-locking restriction makes these Pokemon especially susceptible to being walled by resistant types or forced out by faster threats.
