Gale Wings in Battle

Gale Wings gives all of the Pokemon's Flying-type moves +1 priority when the Pokemon is at full HP. This allows Flying-type attacks to strike before most other moves in a turn, similar to how Quick Attack works but for all Flying-type moves.

Starting in Generation VII, the ability was nerfed to only work when the Pokemon is at full HP. Previously, it worked at any HP level, making it significantly more powerful. This means any damage — even residual damage from entry hazards like Stealth Rock — will deactivate the priority boost until the Pokemon is healed to full HP.

Gale Wings is found on the Fletchling evolutionary line, with Talonflame being the primary competitive user. Before the Generation VII nerf, Talonflame with Gale Wings was dominant in competitive play, as priority Brave Bird was extremely difficult to counter. The full-HP restriction now requires more careful play around entry hazards and chip damage.
