Early Bird
Gen IIIThis Pokémon's remaining sleep turn count falls by 2 rather than 1. If this Pokémon's sleep counter is at 1, it will fall to 0 and then the Pokémon will wake up.
Early Bird in Battle
Early Bird causes the Pokemon's sleep counter to decrease by 2 each turn instead of the normal 1. This effectively halves the duration of sleep, allowing the Pokemon to wake up in roughly half the time it would otherwise take.
The ability works with all forms of sleep, whether induced by Hypnosis, Sleep Powder, Spore, Rest, or any other sleep-causing effect. When using Rest, which normally requires two full turns of sleep, Early Bird reduces this to just one turn, making Rest a much more efficient recovery option.
Early Bird is found on a variety of Pokemon including Dodrio, Kangaskhan, Natu/Xatu, Ledian, Houndoom, Seedot line, and Girafarig. While sleep is a powerful status condition in competitive play, Early Bird is generally considered a weaker ability compared to alternatives, as most players prefer abilities that prevent sleep entirely or provide offensive/defensive benefits.
