Swarm
Gen IIIWhen this Pokémon has 1/3 or less of its HP remaining, its Bug-type moves inflict 1.5× as much regular damage. Overworld: If the lead Pokémon has this ability, the wild encounter rate is increased.
Swarm in Battle
Swarm activates when a Pokémon's HP drops to one-third or below, providing a substantial 1.5× damage boost to all Bug-type moves. This ability functions as a classic "pinch" mechanic, rewarding players who can strategically manage their Pokémon's health to trigger the boost at crucial moments. The damage multiplier applies to the base power calculation, making it particularly potent with already powerful Bug-type attacks.
In competitive play, Swarm creates interesting risk-reward scenarios where trainers must weigh the benefits of the damage boost against the vulnerability of low HP. Pokémon like Volcarona can become incredibly threatening when Swarm activates, as moves like Bug Buzz or Fiery Dance gain significant power. The ability works especially well on bulky Bug-types such as Heracross, which can potentially survive at low HP long enough to capitalize on the boost, or on naturally frail but powerful attackers like Scyther that might find themselves in Swarm range frequently.
The timing of Swarm activation requires careful consideration, as opponents will often try to finish off weakened Bug-types before they can utilize the boosted attacks. This creates a dynamic where Swarm users must balance aggressive positioning with survival, sometimes using moves like Substitute or Focus Sash to ensure they can take advantage of the ability when it matters most.
