Regenerator
Gen VThis Pokémon regains 1/3 of its maximum HP when it is switched out for another Pokémon under any circumstances other than having fainted. This ability does not take effect when a battle ends.
Regenerator in Battle
Regenerator provides exceptional sustain by restoring exactly one-third of a Pokemon's maximum HP whenever it switches out of battle, regardless of whether the switch was voluntary or forced. This healing occurs automatically as long as the Pokemon didn't faint, making it one of the most reliable recovery abilities in competitive play. The ability triggers under all switching circumstances, including being forced out by moves like Roar or U-turn, pivoting moves, or manual switches.
The competitive impact of Regenerator cannot be overstated, as it effectively grants Pokemon incredible longevity throughout extended battles. This makes traditionally bulky Pokemon like Tangrowth and Ho-Oh even more difficult to wear down through repeated exchanges, while also enabling more aggressive playstyles on Pokemon like Mienshao that can pivot in and out of battle freely. The ability transforms these Pokemon into excellent pivots and wall-breakers, as they can absorb hits, deal damage, and then recover substantial health simply by switching out.
Regenerator has remained mechanically unchanged since its introduction in Generation 5, maintaining its consistent one-third healing rate across all generations. This reliability has made it a cornerstone ability for many defensive and pivot-focused strategies, particularly in formats where switching is frequent and health management is crucial for maintaining board control throughout longer games.
