Speed Boost
Gen IIIThis Pokémon's Speed rises one stage after each turn.
Speed Boost in Battle
Speed Boost is a powerful ability that automatically increases a Pokémon's Speed by one stage at the end of each turn, making the user progressively faster as battle continues. This boost occurs regardless of whether the Pokémon attacks, uses a status move, or switches out and back in, though switching does reset the accumulated Speed stages. The ability activates after all other end-of-turn effects are processed, meaning it will trigger even if the Pokémon is put to sleep or paralyzed during that turn.
The competitive impact of Speed Boost cannot be overstated, as it transforms naturally slower Pokémon into devastating speed demons given enough setup time. Blaziken exemplifies this perfectly, using its respectable base 80 Speed to become an unstoppable physical sweeper after just one or two turns of boosting. Similarly, Yanmega leverages Speed Boost alongside its excellent movepool to become a formidable special attacker, while Scolipede uses the ability to support its Baton Pass strategies or become a dangerous physical threat itself.
The ability's passive nature makes it incredibly reliable compared to speed-boosting moves like Agility or Rock Polish, as it requires no move slots or PP investment. However, opponents can counterplay Speed Boost users with priority moves, status conditions that bypass speed entirely, or by applying immediate offensive pressure before the boosts accumulate. Despite these counters, Speed Boost remains one of the most competitively relevant abilities due to its game-changing potential.
