Psychic Surge
Gen VIIWhen this Pokémon enters battle, it changes the terrain to Psychic Terrain.
Psychic Surge in Battle
Psychic Surge automatically sets Psychic Terrain upon the user's entry into battle, fundamentally altering the battlefield for five turns. This terrain prevents grounded Pokémon from being hit by priority moves, effectively neutralizing common strategies like Aqua Jet, Bullet Punch, and Extreme Speed. Additionally, Psychic Terrain boosts the power of Psychic-type moves by 30% for all grounded Pokémon, creating significant offensive pressure for teams built around psychic attackers.
The ability's most prominent user is Tapu Lele, whose exceptional Special Attack stat combined with the terrain boost makes it a formidable offensive threat in competitive play. The priority move protection aspect proves particularly valuable against faster revenge killers that rely on priority to secure knockouts. Indeedee also carries this ability and can provide similar terrain support, though with a more supportive role given its different stat distribution.
Psychic Surge's tactical value extends beyond immediate combat benefits, as it can disrupt opposing terrain setters and priority-based strategies that many teams rely upon. The terrain persists even if the user switches out, making it an excellent lead option for teams that want to establish early field control. However, like all terrain abilities, it can be overwritten by opposing terrain setters, creating interesting mind games around terrain control throughout the match.
