Unseen Fist
Gen VIIIIf the Pokémon uses moves that make direct contact, it can attack the target even if the target protects itself.
Unseen Fist in Battle
Unseen Fist is a revolutionary ability that fundamentally changes how contact moves interact with protective barriers in battle. When a Pokemon with this ability uses any move that makes direct contact, it completely bypasses all forms of protection including Protect, Detect, Spiky Shield, King's Shield, and Baneful Bunker. This means that traditional defensive strategies built around these moves become completely ineffective against contact-based attacks from Pokemon wielding this ability.
The ability's mechanics are straightforward yet powerful - it only affects moves that would normally trigger contact-based abilities or items. Non-contact moves like Aura Sphere or Focus Blast still get blocked by protective moves as normal. Importantly, while Unseen Fist allows the attack to connect through protection, the defending Pokemon still gains the priority protection typically provides, meaning they can still use protective moves to scout or stall effectively against non-contact attacks.
Competitively, Unseen Fist has had a significant impact on the metagame since its introduction in Generation 8. Urshifu, the signature bearer of this ability, has become a formidable threat precisely because its signature moves like Surging Strikes and Wicked Blow can punch through what were previously reliable defensive options. This forces opponents to rely more heavily on immunities, resistances, and switching rather than protection-based stall tactics when facing Urshifu variants.
