Ripen
Gen VIIIRipen in Battle
Ripen is a powerful utility ability introduced in Generation 8 that doubles the numerical effects of any Berry consumed by the Pokemon that possesses it. When a Pokemon with Ripen consumes a Berry, whether through natural HP thresholds, status conditions, or forced consumption via moves like Pluck, the Berry's effect is enhanced significantly. This means healing Berries like Sitrus Berry restore twice their normal HP amount, stat-boosting Berries like Liechi Berry provide double the stat increase, and damage-reducing Berries offer enhanced protection.
The ability works consistently across all Berry types, making it particularly valuable for defensive strategies and endurance-focused builds. Sitrus Berries become especially potent, effectively restoring 50% HP instead of the usual 25%, while Figy Berries and similar confusion-inducing healing Berries restore a full 50% HP rather than 25%. This can transform these Pokemon into formidable walls capable of sustained battle presence.
Competitively, Ripen finds its primary use on Appletun, which can leverage the ability alongside its naturally bulky defensive stats to become an exceptional special wall. The combination of doubled Berry effects with Appletun's Thick Fat ability and respectable HP stat creates opportunities for prolonged defensive play. While the three Pokemon that learn this ability are all part of the same evolutionary line, the mechanic itself opens interesting teambuilding possibilities around Berry-centric strategies.
