Protosynthesis
Gen IXProtosynthesis in Battle
Protosynthesis represents a powerful stat-boosting ability that activates under two distinct conditions: when harsh sunlight is present on the battlefield, or when the Pokemon is holding a Booster Energy item. The ability automatically identifies the Pokemon's highest base stat and provides a 30% boost to that particular stat, making it exceptionally potent for enhancing already impressive capabilities. This boost applies to any stat including Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, or Speed, depending on which one has the highest base value for that specific Pokemon.
The dual activation method gives Protosynthesis remarkable flexibility in competitive play. Teams can either dedicate a moveslot to Sunny Day or pair these Pokemon with sun setters like Torkoal or Ninetales, or simply equip Booster Energy for immediate activation regardless of weather conditions. The Booster Energy route is particularly appealing since it provides instant access to the boost without weather dependency, though it does consume the held item slot that could otherwise be used for items like Life Orb or Choice items.
This ability has become a defining characteristic of several prominent Paradox Pokemon, with Great Tusk using it to boost its already formidable Attack stat, while Roaring Moon leverages it for enhanced Speed or Attack depending on the situation. Walking Wake and other special attackers benefit from Special Attack boosts, making Protosynthesis a versatile tool that adapts to each Pokemon's natural strengths and intended role in competitive battle.
