Thermal Exchange
Gen IXThermal Exchange in Battle
Thermal Exchange is a defensive ability introduced in Generation 9 that provides both offensive rewards and status protection against Fire-type attacks. When a Pokémon with this ability takes damage from any Fire-type move, it receives a one-stage boost to its Attack stat, effectively turning what should be a weakness into an opportunity for increased offensive pressure. Additionally, the ability grants complete immunity to the burn status condition, preventing both direct burn infliction from moves like Will-O-Wisp and the burn chance from Fire-type attacks.
The ability's mechanics are straightforward but powerful in practice. The Attack boost triggers regardless of whether the Fire-type move deals significant damage, meaning even weak Fire-type attacks can inadvertently set up the opponent for a stronger physical counterattack. The burn immunity component works similarly to other status immunities, providing reliable protection against one of the most common and debilitating status conditions in competitive play.
Thermal Exchange finds its primary competitive application through the Baxcalibur evolutionary line, where it serves as the signature ability for these Dragon/Ice types. For Baxcalibur in particular, this ability can transform predicted Fire-type switches into setup opportunities, allowing this already formidable physical attacker to become even more threatening. The combination of Attack boosts and burn immunity makes Fire-type moves significantly less appealing as answers to these Pokemon, forcing opponents to reconsider their typical coverage options.
