Wimp Out
Gen VIIAfter this Pokémon is hit by a move, if that move caused this Pokémon's HP to drop below half, it switches out.
Wimp Out in Battle
Wimp Out forces an automatic switch when the Pokemon's HP drops to half or below after taking damage from an opponent's move. This emergency evacuation mechanic triggers immediately after the damaging move resolves, pulling the Pokemon to safety before it can be finished off. The ability only activates when crossing the 50% HP threshold due to opponent damage, meaning self-inflicted damage from moves like Life Orb or entry hazards won't trigger the switch.
The forced switch occurs even if the Pokemon would otherwise want to stay in battle, making Wimp Out both a defensive lifeline and a potential tactical hindrance. Since the switch happens automatically, it can disrupt momentum and prevent the Pokemon from executing planned strategies. However, this involuntary retreat does guarantee survival in most situations, allowing the Pokemon to potentially return later when conditions are more favorable.
Wimpod is the sole possessor of this ability, and its competitive viability is largely overshadowed by its evolution Golisopod's Emergency Exit, which functions identically but resides on a much more battle-ready Pokemon. While Wimp Out can theoretically provide value in preserving a low-health Pokemon for later use, the lack of control over when switches occur generally makes it more of a liability than an asset in serious competitive play, relegating it primarily to novelty strategies or specific niche scenarios.
