Wonder Guard
Gen IIIProtects against damaging moves that are not super effective.
Wonder Guard in Battle
Wonder Guard represents one of the most unique and restrictive abilities in competitive Pokemon, granting complete immunity to any damaging move that isn't super effective against the user. This means that only moves with a type advantage can deal direct damage, making it an incredibly powerful defensive tool in the right circumstances. However, the ability has several important limitations that prevent it from being completely game-breaking. Fixed damage moves like Night Shade and Seismic Toss can still connect if their types would be super effective, and all forms of indirect damage remain threatening, including weather conditions, status ailments like poison or burn, and entry hazards such as Spikes or Stealth Rock.
The ability comes with strict interaction rules that limit its strategic flexibility. Wonder Guard cannot be copied through Role Play or transferred via Skill Swap, though it can be traced by Pokemon with the Trace ability. Interestingly, a Pokemon with Wonder Guard can still use Role Play itself to replace its own ability, but cannot use Skill Swap to trade it away. The ability can also be temporarily disabled through moves like Gastro Acid or permanently changed with Worry Seed.
In competitive play, Wonder Guard is exclusively associated with Shedinja, whose Bug/Ghost typing creates a unique defensive profile where only five types can deal super effective damage. This makes Shedinja a fascinating niche pick that can completely wall certain team compositions, though its single HP and vulnerability to indirect damage keep it from being overpowered.
