Sniper
Gen IVThis Pokémon inflicts triple damage with critical hits, rather than the usual double damage.
Sniper in Battle
Sniper transforms critical hits from a modest damage boost into a devastating offensive tool by increasing critical hit damage from the standard 1.5× multiplier to a formidable 2.25× multiplier. When a Pokémon with this ability lands a critical hit, the attack deals triple damage instead of the usual double damage, making every successful critical strike significantly more threatening. This ability works with any damaging move and stacks multiplicatively with other damage modifiers, creating opportunities for massive damage output when luck strikes.
The ability has remained mechanically consistent since its introduction in Generation 4, though the game descriptions have been refined over time to clarify that it specifically affects attacking moves. Sniper pairs exceptionally well with moves that have high critical hit ratios or abilities that boost critical hit chances, as the enhanced damage multiplier makes these precision strikes exponentially more valuable. Pokémon like Kingdra and Inteleon can leverage Sniper effectively with moves like Focus Energy or items like Scope Lens to increase their critical hit frequency.
While Sniper's impact is ultimately dependent on the randomness of critical hits, it can create game-changing moments in competitive play. The threat of a potential triple-damage attack forces opponents to play more cautiously around Sniper users, and when combined with high-power moves or stat boosts, these critical hits can easily secure knockouts that would otherwise be impossible.
