Refrigerate
Gen VITurns the bearer's Normal-type moves into Ice-type moves. Moves changed by this ability have 1.3× their power.
Refrigerate in Battle
Refrigerate transforms all of the user's Normal-type moves into Ice-type moves while simultaneously boosting their power by 1.3×, making previously mundane attacks significantly more threatening. This ability effectively converts moves like Hyper Beam, Return, or Body Slam into powerful Ice-type variants that can exploit weaknesses against Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground-type Pokemon. The type conversion occurs before any other calculations, meaning the moves will benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) if the user is an Ice-type Pokemon, and they'll interact with resistances, immunities, and weaknesses as Ice-type moves.
The power boost makes this ability particularly valuable for Pokemon with access to strong Normal-type moves in their movepools. Moves that were previously resisted or dealt neutral damage can become super effective threats, while the 1.3× multiplier ensures these converted moves hit harder than their original versions. This combination of type conversion and power enhancement can catch opponents off guard, especially when common Normal-type moves suddenly threaten Pokemon that would typically resist or wall them.
Both Aurorus and Amaura benefit from this ability, though their Rock/Ice typing means they already receive STAB on the converted moves. The ability's game description was updated in Generation 7 to explicitly mention the power boost, clarifying a mechanic that wasn't initially obvious to players despite being present from the ability's introduction.
