Snow Cloak
Gen IVDuring hail, this Pokémon has 1.25× its evasion, and it does not take hail damage regardless of type. The evasion bonus does not count as a stat modifier. Overworld: If the lead Pokémon has this ability, the wild encounter rate is halved in snow.
Snow Cloak in Battle
Snow Cloak provides a defensive advantage during hail weather conditions by boosting the bearer's evasion to 1.25 times its normal value, making incoming attacks 20% less likely to connect. This evasion increase functions differently from traditional stat boosts, as it doesn't count as a stat modifier and therefore cannot be removed by moves like Clear Smog or Haze. Additionally, Pokemon with Snow Cloak are completely immune to hail damage, allowing Ice-types and other Pokemon to benefit from prolonged hail without suffering the typical residual damage.
The ability's competitive utility is generally limited due to the unreliable nature of evasion-based strategies and the relative rarity of hail teams in most metagames. However, it can provide meaningful value on dedicated hail teams where the weather condition is consistently maintained. Notable users like Articuno and Froslass can leverage the evasion boost alongside their natural Ice typing, while Mamoswine appreciates the hail immunity despite not being purely defensive. The ability saw a terminology update in Generation 9, where "hailstorm" references were changed to "snow" to align with the weather condition's mechanical changes, though the core functionality remained identical.
Snow Cloak works best as a supplementary defensive tool rather than a primary strategy, offering modest survivability improvements when hail support is readily available.
