Supersweet Syrup
Gen IXSupersweet Syrup in Battle
Supersweet Syrup is a signature ability introduced in Generation 9 that creates an immediate battlefield advantage by hampering opposing Pokemon's ability to dodge attacks. When a Pokemon with this ability enters battle for the first time, it automatically reduces the evasion stat of all adjacent opponents by one stage. This effect triggers only once per battle per Pokemon, meaning switching the user out and back in will not reactivate the ability.
The ability's targeting mechanics follow standard adjacency rules, affecting only Pokemon directly next to the user in doubles or multi-battle formats, while hitting all opposing Pokemon in single battles. Unlike many entry abilities, Supersweet Syrup cannot be prevented by abilities like Clear Body or White Smoke, as it directly modifies the evasion stat rather than applying a temporary effect. The evasion reduction persists even if the ability user switches out or faints, making it a permanent handicap for the affected Pokemon until they leave the field.
Currently exclusive to the Applin evolutionary line's final forms, Hydrapple and Dipplin, this ability provides valuable utility in competitive play. The guaranteed accuracy boost helps these typically bulky Grass/Dragon types land crucial moves more reliably, while also benefiting teammates in doubles formats. The one-time restriction prevents abuse through repeated switching, maintaining balance while still offering meaningful strategic value in both offensive and support roles.
