White Smoke

Gen III
Effect

This Pokémon cannot have its stats lowered by other Pokémon. This ability does not prevent any stat losses other than stat modifiers, such as the Speed cut from paralysis; nor self-inflicted stat drops, such as the Special Attack drop from Overheat; nor opponent-triggered stat boosts, such as the Attack boost from Swagger. This Pokémon can still be passed negative stat modifiers through Guard Swap, Heart Swap, or Power Swap. This ability functions identically to Clear Body in battle. Overworld: If the lead Pokémon has this ability, the wild encounter rate is halved.

White Smoke in Battle

White Smoke provides comprehensive protection against stat drops inflicted by opposing Pokemon, making it a valuable defensive ability in competitive play. When a Pokemon with White Smoke is targeted by moves like Intimidate, Tickle, or Screech, the stat reduction is completely negated. This immunity extends to all stat-lowering effects caused by opponents, including secondary effects from moves like Icy Wind or Shadow Ball that might otherwise reduce Speed or Special Defense respectively.

However, White Smoke has several important limitations that players must understand. The ability only blocks stat drops from external sources - self-inflicted stat reductions from moves like Overheat or Close Combat will still occur normally. Status conditions like paralysis will still reduce Speed, and moves like Swagger that boost Attack while causing confusion will still provide the stat boost to the opponent. Additionally, stat manipulation moves like Guard Swap or Heart Swap can still transfer negative stat modifiers to a White Smoke user, bypassing the ability's protection entirely.

The ability functions identically to Clear Body in battle, and among its users, Torkoal stands out as the most competitively relevant Pokemon. As a defensive Fire-type, Torkoal benefits greatly from immunity to Intimidate and other stat-lowering moves, allowing it to maintain its offensive presence while fulfilling its role as a Stealth Rock setter and Rapid Spinner. Centiskorch also appreciates this protection, as it can avoid having its Attack reduced while attempting to set up with moves like Coil.
