Wind Rider

Wind Rider is a defensive ability introduced in Generation 9 that provides both immunity and offensive benefits when faced with wind-based attacks. When a Pokemon with Wind Rider is targeted by any wind move, it takes no damage and instead receives a one-stage Attack boost. This creates an interesting dynamic where opponents must carefully consider their move selection, as wind moves like Hurricane, Air Slash, and Gust become counterproductive against these Pokemon. The ability also triggers when Tailwind takes effect on the field, providing the same Attack boost regardless of which Pokemon set up the speed-boosting condition.

The immunity component of Wind Rider makes it particularly valuable against Flying-type attackers and Pokemon that rely on wind moves as their primary offensive tools. Moves such as Hurricane, which is commonly used on rain teams, become completely ineffective while simultaneously powering up the Wind Rider Pokemon. This creates unique positioning opportunities where these Pokemon can switch in on predicted wind attacks to gain momentum.

Currently exclusive to the Shiftry line and Bramblin evolutionary family, Wind Rider has found niche applications in competitive play. Shiftry benefits particularly well from the Attack boosts given its already respectable offensive stats and diverse movepool. The ability's dual nature of providing both defensive utility and offensive setup potential makes it a noteworthy addition to the ability roster, especially in formats where wind moves see regular usage.
