Weak Armor in Battle

Weak Armor creates a risk-reward dynamic by transforming physical damage into a mixed blessing. When any physical move connects with a Pokémon possessing this ability, it simultaneously loses one stage of Defense while gaining one stage of Speed. This exchange occurs with every individual hit of multi-hit moves like Rock Blast or Bullet Seed, potentially allowing for rapid Speed accumulation if the Pokémon can survive multiple strikes.

The ability underwent a notable enhancement in Generation 7, where the Speed boost was upgraded from a single stage to a sharp boost, though the actual mechanical effect remained a one-stage increase. This change was reflected in the game descriptions but didn't alter the competitive functionality. The timing of these stat changes can create interesting scenarios where a slower Pokémon suddenly outpaces opponents after taking physical hits, though the Defense drops make repeated activation increasingly dangerous.

Competitively, Weak Armor sees varied applications across different Pokémon archetypes. Vanilluxe can leverage the Speed boosts to become a threatening sweeper, while the newer Paldean additions Armarouge and Ceruledge can use the ability to compensate for their moderate base Speed stats. Mandibuzz, with its impressive bulk, can often survive the Defense drops while capitalizing on the Speed increases. However, the ability requires careful positioning since the Defense reduction can quickly spiral into vulnerability against continued physical pressure.
