Water Veil in Battle

Water Veil provides complete immunity to the burn status condition, making it a valuable defensive ability against Fire-type moves and other burn-inducing effects. Once a Pokémon with Water Veil enters battle, it cannot be burned by any means, whether through direct attacks like Scald or Will-O-Wisp, abilities that cause burns, or items like Flame Orb. This protection extends beyond just preventing new burns—if a Pokémon is already burned and somehow gains Water Veil mid-battle, the existing burn is immediately cured.

The ability's utility shines particularly against stall-oriented teams that rely on burn damage for chip damage and Attack reduction. Since burn status halves the Attack stat of physical attackers, Water Veil allows physical sweepers to maintain their full offensive potential against burn-heavy strategies. The ability also has an interesting interaction with switching—if a Pokémon loses Water Veil through abilities like Skill Swap but then regains it by switching out and back in, any burn status acquired during that period is instantly healed.

Among its notable users, Dondozo benefits significantly from Water Veil's protection given its role as a physical wall, while Floatzel can leverage it to maintain consistent physical offense. The ability sees moderate competitive use primarily as a niche counter to burn-centric strategies, though it's often overshadowed by more universally applicable abilities.
