Own Tempo provides straightforward but valuable protection against one of the game's most disruptive status conditions. Pokemon with this ability are completely immune to confusion, whether from moves like Confuse Ray, items like Persim Berry when used offensively, or abilities that might inflict the condition. The protection is absolute—confusion simply cannot be applied to these Pokemon under any circumstances. Additionally, if a Pokemon somehow gains Own Tempo while already confused, the confusion is immediately cured, making it useful in niche scenarios involving ability-changing moves or items.

The ability received a significant upgrade in Generation 9, expanding beyond its original confusion immunity to also block Intimidate. This enhancement makes Own Tempo considerably more valuable in competitive play, as Intimidate is one of the most common and impactful abilities in the metagame. Pokemon like Tinkaton and Mudsdale particularly benefit from this dual protection, as physical attackers that can now maintain their Attack stat while remaining clear-headed in battle.

While Own Tempo was historically considered a relatively minor ability, its expanded utility has elevated its competitive relevance. Pokemon like Lickilicky and Avalugg can now serve as reliable checks to Intimidate users while maintaining consistent damage output without fear of confusion-induced self-damage. The ability's reliability makes it especially valuable on setup sweepers or Pokemon that rely on precise timing for their strategies.
