Rattled
Gen VThis Pokémon's Speed rises one stage with each hit from a damaging Dark-, Ghost-, or Bug-type move.
Rattled in Battle
Rattled provides a Speed boost whenever the Pokemon takes damage from Dark-, Ghost-, or Bug-type attacks, increasing Speed by one stage with each hit. This defensive ability can transform what would normally be unfavorable matchups into opportunities for momentum, allowing slower Pokemon to potentially outspeed threats after taking a hit. The boost triggers regardless of the attack's power, meaning even weak moves like Infestation or Astonish can activate the ability.
The ability has evolved slightly across generations, with Generation 9 expanding its effect to also trigger when the Pokemon is targeted by Intimidate. This enhancement makes Rattled more versatile in doubles formats where Intimidate users are common. The Speed boost applies immediately after taking damage, which can be crucial for revenge killing scenarios or escaping from dangerous situations.
In competitive play, Rattled finds niche use on Pokemon that can capitalize on the Speed boost, though its situational nature limits widespread adoption. Pokemon like Dudunsparce and Granbull can potentially use the ability to turn defensive situations into offensive opportunities, though they must survive the triggering attack first. The ability works best when paired with bulky Pokemon that can reliably tank super-effective hits from the triggering types, then use their newfound Speed advantage to either retaliate or pivot to a better matchup.
