Rivalry in Battle

Rivalry creates a gender-based damage modifier that can significantly impact battle outcomes depending on the opposing Pokemon's gender. When attacking a Pokemon of the same gender, Rivalry boosts damage output by 25%, making it a powerful offensive tool. However, this competitive spirit comes with a notable drawback—damage is reduced by 25% when facing Pokemon of the opposite gender. If either Pokemon involved in the attack is genderless, Rivalry has no effect whatsoever, dealing standard damage.

The ability underwent important mechanical changes since its introduction in Generation 4. Originally, Rivalry only provided the Attack boost against same-gender opponents without the corresponding penalty against opposite-gender Pokemon. Starting in Generation 7, the ability was rebalanced to include the damage reduction against opposite-gender targets, making it a true double-edged sword that requires more strategic consideration.

In competitive play, Rivalry's effectiveness largely depends on team composition and the current metagame's gender distribution. Pokemon like Haxorus and Luxray can leverage the damage boost effectively, but the inconsistent nature of the ability often makes other options more reliable. The prevalence of genderless Pokemon in many competitive formats, particularly legendary and mythical Pokemon, further limits Rivalry's impact. While the 25% boost can secure crucial KOs in favorable matchups, the potential for reduced damage makes it a risky choice for consistent performance.
