Scrappy in Battle

Scrappy allows Pokemon to bypass one of the most fundamental type immunities in battle by enabling Normal-type and Fighting-type moves to hit Ghost-type Pokemon. This ability effectively removes the complete immunity that Ghost-types normally enjoy against these move types, though any secondary typing on the Ghost Pokemon still affects damage calculation as usual. For example, a Normal-type move would deal neutral damage to a pure Ghost-type, but would still be resisted by a Ghost/Steel dual-type.

The ability underwent a significant enhancement in Generation 9, gaining an additional effect that makes the user immune to Intimidate. This secondary function provides valuable protection against the common Attack-lowering ability, making Scrappy users more reliable physical attackers in situations where Intimidate might otherwise cripple their offensive presence.

Competitively, Scrappy finds its niche on physical attackers that rely heavily on Normal- or Fighting-type STAB moves. Pokemon like Sirfetch'd can use powerful Fighting-type attacks without worrying about Ghost-type switch-ins completely nullifying their damage, while Kangaskhan and Stoutland can maintain offensive pressure with Normal-type moves regardless of Ghost-type opponents. The added Intimidate immunity in recent generations has made Scrappy even more appealing for physical sweepers, as it provides both offensive utility and defensive reliability in a single ability slot.
