When a Pokemon with this ability is targeted by sleep-inducing moves like Sleep Powder, Spore, or Hypnosis, the attack simply fails to inflict the status. This protection extends to self-inflicted sleep as well, causing Rest to fail entirely when used by a Pokemon with Vital Spirit. If a Pokemon somehow acquires this ability while already asleep, it will immediately wake up, making it a potential counter to sleep-based strategies.

The ability operates identically to Insomnia in battle, offering the same mechanical benefits with no functional differences between the two. This makes Pokemon like Electivire and Magmortar particularly valuable as sleep status absorbers, as they can switch into predicted sleep moves without consequence. Annihilape also benefits significantly from this protection, as sleep immunity allows it to maintain offensive pressure without worrying about being put to sleep during its setup attempts.

While not the most flashy ability, Vital Spirit serves as solid insurance against sleep-heavy teams and Pokemon that rely on Rest for recovery.
