Poison Touch grants a 30% chance to inflict poison on the target whenever the user makes contact with a move. This ability activates with any physical attack that requires the attacker to physically touch the defender, making it a potent tool for wearing down opponents over time. The poisoning effect is considered an additional effect, meaning it can be blocked by abilities like Shield Dust, and it triggers before other contact-based abilities such as Mummy can take effect.

The ability has remained mechanically unchanged since its introduction in Generation 5, consistently providing that 30% activation rate across all generations. This makes Poison Touch particularly valuable on Pokemon that frequently use contact moves, as it can gradually chip away at the opponent's health while dealing direct damage. The poison status itself deals damage equal to 1/8 of the target's maximum HP each turn, making it especially effective against bulky Pokemon that might otherwise wall physical attackers.

Notable users like Toxicroak and Sneasler can leverage Poison Touch effectively in competitive play, as their naturally aggressive movesets involve plenty of contact moves.
