Unburden is a powerful Speed-boosting ability that doubles a Pokemon's Speed stat when it uses or loses its held item during battle. This activation occurs through various means, including consuming berries, using items like Focus Sash or Air Balloon when they break, or having items forcibly removed by moves like Knock Off. The Speed boost remains active until the Pokemon either gains a new item or switches out of battle, making it a potentially game-changing momentum shift that doesn't count as a traditional stat modifier.

The ability's versatility makes it particularly valuable in competitive play, where Pokemon can strategically use consumable items to trigger the boost at crucial moments. Notable users like Hawlucha can consume their Sitrus Berry or have their item knocked off to immediately double their Speed, potentially turning them into dangerous late-game sweepers. Sceptile and Sneasler similarly benefit from this dramatic Speed increase, allowing them to outpace threats they normally couldn't. Accelgor, already naturally fast, becomes nearly impossible to outspeed once Unburden activates.

What makes Unburden especially potent is that it provides no visual notification when it triggers, requiring opponents to mentally track whether the ability has activated. The doubling effect can completely change the flow of battle, transforming moderately fast Pokemon into speed demons capable of outspeeding even naturally quick threats like Dragapult or Regieleki.
