Plus functions as a cooperative ability that boosts a Pokémon's Special Attack by 50% when an ally on the field possesses either the Plus or Minus ability. This enhancement operates outside the traditional stat modification system, meaning it stacks with other boosts and cannot be removed by moves like Clear Smog or Haze. The ability creates a symbiotic relationship between teammates, encouraging specific team compositions that can capitalize on this damage amplification.

The ability underwent significant changes throughout its existence. Initially in Generation 3, Plus only activated when paired with a Minus ability user, creating an asymmetrical partnership. However, starting in Generation 5, the ability was expanded to trigger when any ally has either Plus or Minus, making it more versatile and allowing for mirror matchups where multiple Plus users can benefit simultaneously.

An important mechanical quirk involves Gastro Acid and similar ability-suppressing effects. When either a Plus or Minus user on the same side has their ability disabled, both Pokémon lose their respective boosts, creating a vulnerability that opponents can exploit. In competitive play, Plus has seen limited usage due to the restrictive team building requirements, though Pokémon like Klinklang and Ampharos have occasionally appeared in doubles formats where the ability's activation conditions can be more reliably met. The strategy typically revolves around protecting both ability users while leveraging the significant Special Attack boost to overwhelm opponents.
