Wandering Spirit is a unique ability that creates an immediate and permanent ability exchange whenever the user is struck by a direct contact move. When an opposing Pokemon makes physical contact with a Wandering Spirit user, both Pokemon instantly swap their abilities for the remainder of the battle. This exchange occurs before any other effects from the attacking move are processed, meaning the newly acquired ability can potentially influence how the contact move's damage or secondary effects are calculated.

The ability triggers on any move classified as making contact, which includes most physical attacks like Tackle, Earthquake exceptions aside, and even some special moves like Grass Knot. However, moves that don't make contact, such as Rock Slide or most special attacks, will not trigger the swap. Importantly, the exchange is mutual and irreversible - both Pokemon lose their original abilities and gain each other's for the entire duration they remain in battle.

Runerigus, the sole possessor of this ability, can leverage Wandering Spirit strategically in competitive play by potentially crippling setup sweepers or defensive walls that rely heavily on their abilities. The threat of losing a crucial ability like Guts or Marvel Scale often forces opponents to play more cautiously around physical attacks, giving Runerigus significant psychological pressure despite its otherwise modest stats. However, players must be equally careful, as losing Wandering Spirit itself can leave Runerigus without any ability for the remainder of the match.
