Steadfast is a reactive ability that provides a silver lining to one of the most frustrating status conditions in competitive play. When a Pokemon with this ability flinches from moves like Fake Out, Air Slash, or Iron Head, it immediately gains a one-stage boost to its Speed stat. This creates an interesting risk-reward dynamic where opponents must weigh the immediate tempo advantage of flinching against potentially making the target faster and more dangerous on subsequent turns.

The ability's competitive utility largely depends on the metagame's prevalence of flinch-inducing moves and the specific Pokemon wielding it. Lucario, one of the most notable users, can potentially turn flinch attempts into setup opportunities, especially when combined with its offensive prowess and diverse movepool. Similarly, Gallade and Machamp can capitalize on Speed boosts to outpace threats they normally couldn't. However, the situational nature of Steadfast means it's often overshadowed by more consistently useful abilities on these same Pokemon.

While Steadfast provides some insurance against flinch-based strategies, its reactive nature makes it unreliable as a primary game plan.
