Stench provides a modest but potentially disruptive offensive benefit by granting all of the user's damaging moves a 10% chance to cause the target to flinch. This effect only applies to moves that don't already have a flinch chance built into their mechanics, preventing any potential stacking issues. The ability functions independently of held items, meaning Pokemon with Stench can still benefit from items like King's Rock or Razor Fang for additional flinch opportunities on moves that weren't already affected by the ability.

While the 10% activation rate might seem low, Stench can occasionally create valuable momentum shifts in battle, particularly when combined with faster Pokemon that can capitalize on the speed advantage. The ability saw a significant mechanical change from Generation 3 to Generation 5, evolving from purely an overworld encounter-reduction effect to gaining its current battle functionality. This transformation made previously overlooked Pokemon like Muk and Weezing slightly more viable in casual play.

In competitive contexts, Stench remains largely overshadowed by more reliable abilities, though it can provide unexpected utility in specific situations. Pokemon like Garbodor and Skuntank that carry this ability typically rely on their typing and movepool rather than Stench for their competitive value, making it more of a minor bonus than a defining characteristic in serious play.
