Sombra Trampa en combate

Shadow Tag creates a powerful trapping effect that prevents opposing Pokemon from voluntarily switching out or fleeing from battle. When a Pokemon with this ability is on the field, the opponent becomes locked into their current Pokemon and must either defeat the Shadow Tag user, get knocked out themselves, or rely on specific escape methods. This creates intense pressure situations where opponents cannot simply pivot to a better matchup or retreat from unfavorable scenarios.

The ability has several important exceptions that prevent it from becoming completely oppressive. Pokemon with the Run Away ability can still flee despite Shadow Tag's presence, and any moves or items that facilitate switching (such as U-turn, Volt Switch, or Eject Button) will still function normally. Additionally, other Pokemon with Shadow Tag are immune to the trapping effect, preventing infinite stalemates between Shadow Tag users.

Competitively, Shadow Tag is most notorious on Gothitelle and Wobbuffet, where it enables devastating trapping strategies. Gothitelle can use its decent bulk and movepool to set up or force specific matchups, while Wobbuffet becomes a formidable revenge killer that can guarantee trades through Counter and Mirror Coat. The ability's power level has made it a contentious element in competitive play, as it can create situations where skilled play is overshadowed by the raw trapping mechanic, leading to restrictions in some tournament formats.
