Las habilidades Pokémon son efectos pasivos que influyen en la mecánica de combate, las interacciones en el campo e incluso los encuentros salvajes. Introducidas en la tercera generación, todos los Pokémon tienen al menos una habilidad que se activa automáticamente. Las habilidades Pokémon son efectos pasivos que posee todo Pokémon. Introducidas en la Generación III (Rubí y Zafiro), añaden una capa estratégica a los combates al aportar beneficios o desventajas automáticos sin requerir un movimiento. Entender qué habilidad tiene un Pokémon y cómo interactúa con el metajuego es clave para crear equipos competitivos.
Habilidades normales y ocultas
Cada especie de Pokémon puede tener una o dos habilidades normales y una habilidad oculta. Las habilidades normales se obtienen al capturar o criar Pokémon. Las habilidades ocultas, introducidas en la Generación V, requieren métodos especiales, como las Incursiones Dinamax de Espada y Escudo, las cadenas SOS de Sol y Luna o un Parche Habilidad.
Impacto competitivo de las habilidades
Las habilidades pueden determinar la viabilidad competitiva de un Pokémon. Intimidate es una de las más influyentes y baja el Ataque del rival al entrar al combate. Las habilidades que activan clima, como Drizzle (Pelipper) y Drought (Torkoal), definen arquetipos enteros. Las que aumentan la Velocidad, como Speed Boost (Blaziken), y las de terreno, como Electric Surge (Tapu Koko), moldean el panorama competitivo.
Cambios de habilidades entre generaciones
Game Freak ajusta regularmente las habilidades entre generaciones. Algunos Pokémon reciben nuevas habilidades ocultas, mientras que otras pueden mejorarse o debilitarse. Por ejemplo, Gale Wings fue debilitada en la Generación VII para funcionar solo con los PS al máximo, y Prankster cambió para que los movimientos de estado potenciados por ella fallen contra objetivos de tipo Siniestro.
Habilidades por generación
La Generación III introdujo 76 habilidades con el estreno del sistema. Cada generación posterior ha ampliado la lista: la Generación IV añadió habilidades como Adaptability y Download; la Generación V introdujo las habilidades ocultas junto con Moxie y Prankster; y la Generación IX trajo nuevas habilidades para los Pokémon de Escarlata y Púrpura.
