Turbine (Steam Engine)

Steam Engine transforms defensive situations into explosive offensive opportunities by converting incoming Fire- or Water-type attacks into massive Speed boosts. When a Pokemon with this ability takes damage from either of these move types, its Speed stat immediately increases by three stages, representing a dramatic 2.5x multiplier that can instantly transform a slow Pokemon into a dangerous sweeper. The attacking move still deals its full damage, making this ability a high-risk, high-reward proposition that requires careful positioning and prediction.

The ability's competitive applications shine brightest on Coalossal, where it creates fascinating strategic dynamics. Opponents face a difficult choice when confronting this Rock/Fire behemoth: avoid using the common Water-type moves typically employed against Fire-types, or risk empowering Coalossal into a fearsome late-game threat. This dilemma becomes particularly pronounced in formats where Coalossal can survive the initial hit and retaliate with powerful STAB moves like Stone Edge or Flamethrower at blazing speeds.

Steam Engine's presence has influenced team building considerations since its introduction in Generation 8, as players must weigh the risks of using Fire- or Water-type coverage moves against teams potentially carrying these Pokemon. The ability remains unchanged from its original implementation, consistently providing the same three-stage Speed boost regardless of the attacking move's power or additional effects, making it a reliable if situational tool for momentum shifts.
