Pokémon-Fähigkeiten sind passive Effekte, die Kampfmechaniken, Feldinteraktionen und sogar wilde Begegnungen beeinflussen. Sie wurden in Generation III eingeführt; jedes Pokémon hat mindestens eine Fähigkeit, die automatisch aktiviert wird. Normale vs. Versteckte Fähigkeiten

Jede Pokemon-Art kann eine oder zwei normale Fähigkeiten und eine Versteckte Fähigkeit haben. Normale Fähigkeiten erhält man gewöhnlich beim Fangen oder Züchten von Pokemon. Versteckte Fähigkeiten, eingeführt in Generation V, erfordern besondere Methoden – etwa Dyna-Raids in Sword & Shield, SOS-Ketten in Sun & Moon oder einen Ability Patch.

Kompetitiver Einfluss von Fähigkeiten

Fähigkeiten können die kompetitive Spielbarkeit eines Pokemon bestimmen. Intimidate ist eine der einflussreichsten Fähigkeiten und senkt beim Einwechseln den Angriff des Gegners. Fähigkeitsänderungen zwischen Generationen

Game Freak passt Fähigkeiten zwischen Generationen regelmäßig an. Manche Pokemon erhalten neue Versteckte Fähigkeiten, während bestehende Fähigkeiten verstärkt oder abgeschwächt werden können. Gale Wings wurde etwa in Generation VII abgeschwächt und wirkt nur noch bei vollen KP, während Prankster so geändert wurde, dass dadurch verstärkte Status-Attacken gegen Unlicht-Ziele fehlschlagen.

Generation III führte mit dem neuen System 76 Fähigkeiten ein.
