About Held Items (Negative)

Bad Held Items inflict negative effects on the holder, but competitive players have turned these drawbacks into powerful strategies. Items like Toxic Orb and Flame Orb are staples in competitive play through ability synergies.

Toxic Orb

Poisons the holder after one turn. Used with Poison Heal (Gliscor, Breloom) to gain 1/8 HP recovery per turn instead of taking damage. Also activates Guts for a 1.5x Attack boost while preventing other status conditions like burn or sleep.

Flame Orb

Burns the holder after one turn. The primary combo is Guts + Flame Orb on Pokemon like Conkeldurr and Ursaring for a guaranteed 1.5x Attack boost. The burn damage (1/16 HP) is less than Toxic Orb's scaling poison damage in longer battles.

Strategic Depth

These items demonstrate Pokemon's strategic depth: a harmful item becomes beneficial with the right ability. Sticky Barb transfers to the opponent on contact, Black Sludge poisons non-Poison types while healing Poison types. Understanding these synergies separates advanced players.
