About Jewels
Jewels are consumable held items that boost the power of a move of a specific type by 30% on first use. Introduced in Generation V, they are consumed after the boosted attack. Only the Normal Gem remains obtainable in modern games.
Jewel Mechanics
Each Jewel corresponds to a type and boosts the first move of that type used by 30%. The jewel is consumed after use. In Generation V, all 18 type Gems were available. From Generation VI onward, only the Normal Gem can be obtained.
Competitive Legacy
Normal Gem + Explosion or Fake Out was a popular VGC strategy. Flying Gem + Acrobatics doubled up since Acrobatics gains power when itemless. The removal of most Gems in Gen VI was a significant metagame shift.
