Gli strumenti negativi infliggono effetti sfavorevoli a chi li tiene, ma i giocatori competitivi hanno trasformato questi svantaggi in potenti strategie. Strumenti come Toxic Orb e Flame Orb sono capisaldi del competitivo grazie alle sinergie con le abilità.
Toxic Orb
Avvelena chi la tiene dopo un turno. Usata con Poison Heal (Gliscor, Breloom), consente di recuperare 1/8 degli HP per turno invece di subire danni. Attiva anche Guts per un aumento di 1,5x dell'Attacco, prevenendo altri stati come scottatura o sonno.
Flame Orb
Scottatura chi la tiene dopo un turno. La combinazione principale è Guts + Flame Orb su Pokemon come Conkeldurr e Ursaring per un aumento garantito di 1,5x dell'Attacco. Il danno da scottatura (1/16 degli HP) è inferiore al danno crescente dell'avvelenamento da Toxic Orb nelle lotte lunghe.
Profondità strategica
