Trace

Trace activates immediately when its user enters battle, copying a random ability from one of the opposing Pokemon on the field. This makes it one of the most versatile abilities in competitive play, as it can potentially grant access to powerful abilities like Intimidate, Magic Guard, or Regenerator depending on the matchup. The copied ability remains active for the duration of the Pokemon's time on the field, allowing for strategic plays that can completely shift momentum.

However, Trace has several important limitations that prevent it from being overpowered. It cannot copy signature abilities like Wonder Guard, Multitype, or Illusion, nor can it copy other Trace users, preventing infinite loops. Additionally, abilities tied to specific forms like Forecast and Zen Mode are blocked, as is the transformation ability Imposter. In doubles or multi-battles, Trace randomly selects from available opponent abilities, adding an element of unpredictability that can work both for and against the user.

The Gardevoir line represents Trace's most prominent competitive usage, where the ability can turn this already formidable special attacker into an even more threatening presence. Porygon2, with its incredible bulk via Eviolite, can become nearly unstoppable when copying defensive abilities like Magic Guard or Flame Body. The unpredictable nature of Trace makes it both a powerful tool for adaptation and a risky gambit that requires careful team building and battle awareness.
