Run Away

Run Away is an ability that exclusively affects wild Pokemon encounters, guaranteeing that the user can successfully flee from battle regardless of any trapping moves or abilities that would normally prevent escape. When a Pokemon with Run Away attempts to run from a wild encounter, the escape will always succeed, even if the opponent has used moves like Mean Look, Block, or Spider Web, or possesses abilities like Shadow Tag or Arena Trap that typically prevent fleeing.

This ability has remained functionally unchanged since its introduction in Generation 3, though the game descriptions became more specific over time to clarify its effect on wild battles specifically. The ability has no impact whatsoever on trainer battles, making it completely irrelevant in competitive play where all battles are against other trainers. In wild encounters, it essentially serves as a guaranteed escape route, which can be useful for players trying to avoid unwanted battles or dangerous situations.

From a competitive standpoint, Run Away is considered one of the least useful abilities in the game since it provides zero benefit in any official battle format. Pokemon like Dudunsparce, Rapidash, and Dodrio that possess this ability are often better served by their alternative abilities or hidden abilities when used in competitive play. The ability's niche utility is limited to overworld exploration and wild Pokemon encounters, making it primarily a quality-of-life feature rather than a strategic tool.
